Iowa approves more fast-track teaching programs

Friday Sep 4, 2009 14:02:44 EDT

The Iowa Board of Education has approved a plan that will allow for fast-track teaching license programs at two private colleges. Morningside College in Sioux City and Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield will now offer the courses to Iowans who have bachelor’s degrees and want to teach middle or high school.

Under the programs, students take a year of part-time classes followed by a year of teaching on an intern license.

Since 2005, Iowa has allowed colleges to develop the alternative programs. The only provider so far has been Kaplan University. Officials say Iowa’s three state-run universities and Simpson College in Indianola are drawing up plans to offer programs.
