SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Colleges and universities would have to aid students who are called to active duty in the California National Guard under a bill approved by the state Senate.
Sen. Lou Correa says college students often lose their tuition when they are called up. They also often lose credits and time toward their degrees.
His bill would require academic institutions to help the soldiers and airmen meet coursework requirements. They also would get credit or refunds for the tuition and fees they paid when they are called to active service.
The bill by Correa, a Democrat from Anaheim, was approved unanimously May 24. It now goes to the Assembly.
