A career catalog is your one-stop shop for everything a prospective civilian employer could ask for, says Virginia Employment Commission veterans representative Dave Silcox, a former Marine and speaker at Army Career and Alumni Program transition courses in the Washington, D.C., area.

The following is a list of everything Silcox says you need to create your own career catalog and a "master application," so that when a company asks, every document is within reach.

It may be appropriate to keep some original documents in a safe-deposit box.

Military service documents

• Proof of military separation, Form DD-214.

• Military training record.

• Verification of Military Experience and Training, Form DD-2586.

• Service record.

• Medical record.

• Honors and awards.

• Security clearance.

Personal identification

• Birth certificate.

• Social Security card.

• Passport or other photo ID.

• Proof of citizenship, if applicable.

Work experience

• Work history, including job titles, employers, duties and accomplishments at each job.

• Work samples.

• Honors and citations.

• Community activities.

• Salary history.

• References.

Education and training

• High school and college transcripts.

• Diplomas, certificates and licenses.

• Educational honors.

• Extracurricular activities.
