Higher unemployment rates among disabled

Monday Mar 23, 2009 11:22:22 EDT

A Labor Department official characterized workers with disabilities as an “untapped pool” in a recent report by the Society for Human Resource Management.

People with disabilities were unemployed at a much higher rate that those without — 13.2 percent compared with 8.3 percent — according to the report. One group, ThisAbled.com, is petitioning the federal government to raise its number of workers with disabilities, which has declined to less than 1 percent over the past decade.
