Obama orders federal agencies to set up vet job offices
Staff report

Uncle Sam wants you — again.

That’s the message of a new executive order President Barack Obama signed Nov. 9, instructing 24 agencies to promote job opportunities for veterans in the federal government.

At the top, the order creates an interagency Council on Veterans Employment that will advise the president and the director of the Office of Personnel Management, who is responsible for a plan to market veterans to federal agencies and vice versa, and develop training for hiring managers.

Closer to the ground, the president wants each agency to establish a Veterans Employment Program Office that will recruit vets and match them with jobs, and help them adjust to a civilian workplace. Look for the offices at a federal agency near you within four months.

“This initiative is about more than repaying our debt for [veterans’] courageous service and selfless sacrifice. It’s also about continuing to fill the ranks of federal employees with men and women who possess the skills, dedication and sense of duty that Americans deserve from their public servants,” Obama said.
